Murphy's World

Make 'em laugh, make 'em laugh

I was waiting for a load at Sears distribution when this other driver got called on the CB that his load was ready and he should come to the guard shack for paperwork.
He bobtailed to the guard shack and climbed out of his cabover, and just as he started walking, the driver's door of his tractor hit him in the back of the head as his truck rolled straight for the guard shack. He scrambled frantically to climb back in and set the brakes as the guards ran for their lives. The driver got his brakes set, and the truck axles hopped and skidded to a stop three feet from the guard shack.
I was in my truck waiting and saw the whole thing. I felt bad for him getting knocked in the noggin, but couldn't help myself; I laughed so hard I cried.

Big Murphy

Dear Laughing in L.A.,
There are so many things that are right with your letter – and a few things that are just plain wrong – that I don't know where to begin. Let's start with everything that's wrong, because that's a shorter list and this is Murphy's World.
     What's wrong:
1. Laughing at the misfortunes of others, especially if his misfortune results in getting him smacked in the melon by his own truck door, and super especially if we're talking about a fellow driver. Not cool.
2. Skidding to a stop three feet from the guard shack is a little too close for comfort.
OK, now that we've got that out of the way, let's look at all that's right with your story:
1. Guards running for their lives? It don't get any better than that.
2. The driver recovers from his smack-down and averts disaster with a smooth move.
3. I don't know who got the biggest laugh out of this, you or me.

Regards,

Murphy and Lucky Dog
